A solvent is a substance that has the ability to dissolve other substances without causing any chemical changes. This ability of a solvent is determined by the compatibility between the solvent and the solute. Simply put, likes dissolve likes.

A basic distinction between solvents is made by categorising them into inorganic and organic solvents.

Inorganic Solvents: They are solvents that do not contain carbon. The most popular inorganic solvent is water and solutions of it.

Organic Solvents: They are solvents that contain carbon in their compounds. In addition, they can contain oxygen molecules as well as halogens (chlorine, bromine, iodine, etc.)
